With the half term wrapping up, the children are reaching the end of their units of sport.

Towards the end of the unit the lessons become more games orientated and focus of modified games, learning rules and working in a team. During the football lessons, the children have been combining their dribbling and passing skills at the younger end of the school, to try and outwit their opponents. Similarly, with the older children they are still working to master the basic passing and dribbling skills as well as developing their tackling and defending. When the children start to play games, that are close to the real game itself, they forget the skills of passing and moving into space so we have been trying to encourage these skills during games so that they spread across the pitch and work as a team.

In netball, Newgate have continued to use their throwing skills, this week focusing on throwing at a target. Developing from throwing a beanbag into various hoop targets and then progressing into shooting into a proper netball net. After last week’s carousel of netball skills, Northgate and Watergate decided that they needed to improve their shooting skills too. Both classes learnt the correct netball shooting technique and put it into practise with hoops at various heights and then in pressurised situations.

In their final swimming lesson of the half term, the children have been working on their water skills, ticking off the requirements for the swim stages they are working towards. After half term we look forward to Newgate joining us at the swimming pool.

Unfortunately due to the poor weather on Thursday, the year 1 Mini Kickers Tournament was postponed. We now look ahead to the first league football match for our year 3/4 team on Tuesday as well as the Year 2 Mini Kickers next Thursday.

On Monday St Martin’s are hosting a Judo master class with Jess from Classroom Judo, a few children from each of the North West Academies Trust schools will take part in a session which will further develop their judo skills. Throughout the year their will be more opportunities for children to take part in master-classes for various sports, continuing with netball after half term.
