A World Inside my Backpack.

Shipgate have been very busy this week.

In English, they have been planning their recounts about Leon’s journey to the circus. Shipgate have worked in house and table teams to discuss and share the following: how to plan and structure their recount, how to link the paragraphs, how to express themselves through a variety of key punctuation and grammar strategies, and how to check their work effectively. After these collaborative sessions the children were able to apply what they had learnt independently into their own work.

In maths, the children have been learning how to add and subtract fractions with different denominators, within a word problem context as well. Then, towards the end of the week, the children started to learn how to multiply whole numbers by fractions. Shipgate were also able to consolidate learning from last year, by converting any improper fraction answers to mixed numbers.

In their topic work, the children have been learning in more detail about rationing during the war and the types of food children and adults ate during these times - and how little of it there was. They used sheets and iPads to research and design their own weekly meal plan, as though they were a child of war.

As well as this, during their enterprise session this week, Shipgate started to plan an imaginary business, focusing on how some of the best business plans come from imagining how to make something better. They thought of something they wished was possible. They thought about how they could turn this wish into a business. One of my personal favourites was ‘A World Inside my Backpack.’

Finally, during their debating session, the children learnt about how to make a point and back it up with evidence that supports your argument. They worked in teams, and as a whole class to design an argument for or against having to come to school on your birthday - unsurprisingly the majority voted against!

Enjoy your weekend everyone,

They Year 5 Team.
