Travelling Back in Time!

Firstly, thank you to those of you who took the time to attend the curriculum presentation evening. We really appreciate it.

In maths this week, the children have been learning how to write 6,7 and 8 digit numbers in words, as well as rounding these numbers to their nearest 1,000, 10,000 and 100,000. Shipgate worked incredibly hard during their group work sessions, supporting their peers and were able to apply themselves excellently during the independent tasks - we are very proud of them.

For the next few weeks, in English, the children are focusing on story writing. They are going to base their stories on the book they used during residential ‘Leon and the Place Between.’ This week, we focused on the magic that Leon steps in to get to the Place Between. The children studied the poem ‘The Magic Box’ by Kit Wright before planning and writing their own poems about what they would put inside their magic box.

As part of their topic work the children have been researching what homes during the wartime were like. The children worked together to create factual posters on what wartime homes were like. For example, they researched how people used to have to ration their food and water, as well as how some people had to be granted permission from the council before buying furniture, as it was so scarce. Shipgate also looked at how portion charts were used on the wall in shopping markets to show fair sizes of food helpings under rationing rules.

Finally, as part of the children’s RE topic on worship, this week they reflected upon how music makes them feel and why it is used for religious worship. In french, the children have been practising using the future tense to talk about what they want to be when they are older.

Enjoy your weekend,

The Year 5 Team.
