Pupil Progress

Phonics Screening Check 2015

The national Phonics Screening Check was introduced in 2012.  All Year 1 pupils now understake a short, statutory assessment to ensure that they are making sufficient progress in phonics skills to read words and are on track to become fluent readers who can enjoy reading for pleasure and for learning.  Any child who does not reach the expected standard in Year 1 has the opportunity to undertake the assessment again at the end of Year 2 after receiving additional targeted support.

In 2014, 69% of all Year 1 children who undertook the assessment nationally reached the expected standard.  Pupils at St Martin's Academy were first eligible to take part in the assessment in the summer of 2015 when 100% of all pupils achieved the expected standard. The national data is yet to be published.

Early Years Foundation Stage

We are very proud of how hard our children work and the range of opportunities they have to support their learning. The progress of our children has been measured in line with national expectations within the EYFS and moderated by statutory visits and meetings by the local authority EYFS team.  Over the last two years, our children in Newgate performed higher than their peers nationally and the overwhelming majority of children made progress far beyond that which is expected on entry to Key Stage 1.
