KS1 Standardised Assessment Tests 2017

Children in the third year of school, Year 2 (Watergate) undertake statutory tests in reading and mathematics each May. The standardised results of these test are taken alongside teacher assessments in both areas, plus writing and science, to judge progress and attainment at this interim point in their primary education.

Phonics Screening Check 2017

The national Phonics Screening Check was introduced in 2012.  All Year 1 pupils now understake a short, statutory assessment to ensure that they are making sufficient progress in phonics skills to read words and are on track to become fluent readers who can enjoy reading for pleasure and for learning.  Any child who does not reach the expected standard in Year 1 has the opportunity to undertake the assessment again at the end of Year 2 after receiving additional targeted support.

In 2017, 81% of all Year 1 children who undertook the assessment nationally reached the expected standard.  At St Martin's Academy, 100% of all pupils achieved the expected standard.

Early Years Foundation Stage 2017

We are very proud of how hard our children work and the range of opportunities they have to support their learning. The progress of our children has been measured in line with national expectations within the EYFS and moderated by statutory visits and meetings by the local authority EYFS team.  Over the last four years, our children in Newgate have performed higher than their peers nationally and the overwhelming majority of children made progress far beyond that which is expected on entry to Key Stage 1.
