English: KS2 Grammar Punctuation and Spelling – Pages 94 & 95 – Homophones

This page will support the children to apply their recent learning of homophones.

Reading: Please continue to read often with your child. If your child is a free reader, it is important they read a variety of text types and different authors – to continue to secure their enjoyment of reading. The children have access to a range of texts within our class library, which they are encouraged to use when changing their books. They are welcome to read a book from home within school.

Spellings: Spellings were added to your child’s spelling book on Thursday. These will be tested next Thursday.

Mathematics: KS2 Problem Solving 1 & 2 – Area and Perimeter sheet

These pages are differentiated for each group to practice their skills of calculating area and perimeter of shapes.

Perimeter: This requires the children to apply their learning from earlier in the week. They should recognise that they need to add all the measurements around the outside of the shape to find the perimeter. They should ensure they write the unit of measurement (cm) after their answers.

Area: This requires the children to apply their learning from this week. They should recognise they need to multiply the length by the height to find the area. Northgate should remember when they are finding the area of these shapes their unit of measurement is cm² (squared). Problem Solving 2: The children were challenged to find the area of compound shapes, but splitting them up into two separate shapes then adding the answers together to find the total area. For example, for question 1) they could multiple the top part of the shape (9cm x 3cm) to find the total area is 27cm². Then, for the second rectangle they will multiply 15cm x 9cm, to find the answer of 135cm². They should be encouraged to partition the numbers and use the grid method to multiply these numbers. Adding the area of both parts of the shape together (27cm² and 135cm²), they should find the total area is 162cm².

If the children are unsure about their homework, please ensure they come and see me before Thursday so I can work with them during morning challenge.

English: KS2 Comprehension pages 26 & 27 The Secret History of Tom Trueheart

If your child finds the text particularly tricky, please read it to them, and ask them to answer the questions. Being able to understand and answer the questions that is the focus here.

Mathematics: KS2 Maths Workout – pages 29 & 30 – Money Problems

This requires the children to use and apply their knowledge of money they have been developing this week.

Page 29 – 1. The children have been taught to either use column subtraction or counting on to find out how much change they would get. They may benefit from using real coins to visualise the problems. 2. The children should add each pair of numbers together using either column addition or a mental strategy and place the answer in the box. They may need the examples highlighted to them to understand. 3. The children should recognise there are 100 pennies in a pound, so should be able to complete this part confidently. 4. The children can either count in tens or should recognise how many 10p’s they would need. If needed, using real coins may support their understanding.

Page 301. The children need to either use a mental strategy or column addition to find out how much money there is in total. It may help them to have coins infront of them to assist their understanding with parts c and d. 2. Just like on the previous page, the children should subtract each pair of numbers using either column subtraction or a mental strategy. The main difference is the children need to subtract the horizontal top line from the vertical numbers. 3. Again, the children should either use counting on or column subtraction if they are confident to do so. e.g 100p (£1) – 18p.

KS2 Problem Solving 1 & 2 – Inverse Sheet

These pages are differentiated for each group to practice their skills of inverse, a skill that will help them increase accuracy within their work.

Part 1 – This requires the children to understand the relationship between addition and subtraction. They should use the 3 numbers to create number sentences, which represent the inverse. They should have 2 additions and 2 subtractions e.g 12 + 15 = 27 etc.

Part 2 – This requires the children to use column addition to first solve the questions and then use column subtraction to check for accuracy. They have been practising these all week within their maths lessons. They have been taught to use the answer as the top number, and to take the second number being added away when completing the column subtraction. They should then check they have the same 3 numbers to check their answers are correct.

KS2 Problem Solving 1 – pages 16 & 17 – Supper Time

These pages will help children apply their knowledge of telling the time. They may need a clock/watch to aid their understanding.

Page 16 – The questions involve the children to accurately measure how much time has passed between events. They should use their 5 times table knowledge, whilst recognising there are 15 minutes in a quarter of an hour, 30 minutes in half an hour, 45 minutes in three quarters of an hour and 60 minutes in an hour.

Page 17 – 8. The children should draw the time on each clock step by step, so they can find the answer to the question. 9. The children could draw a rectangle with the rows and columns to calculate how many pieces there were.

KS2 Problem Solving 2 - pages 20 & 21

These pages will help children apply their prior learning and demonstrate misconceptions which can be rectified within class.

Page 20 – 2. The children should be able to use their rhyme to recall how many days are in October. They may need to be reminded how many days are in a fortnight. 3. The children have discussed leap years recently and should recall February has 28 days in a non-leap year. 4. The children should apply their shape skills to recall the perimeter is the distance around the outside of the pool, so they should add the length of all the sides together. They may need reminding to find the area they multiply the length by the width, so calculating the sum of 25 x 12, which they could use the grid method to solve. 5. The children should multiply the children in the team by the lengths, then by 4 for the total number of teams. They will then find the total lengths, and need to multiply the answer by the length of the pool (32 x 25).

Page 21 – The children demonstrate the use of column addition, subtraction and grid method where necessary to solve the questions. 9. The children should find 10% of the cost by dividing it by 10. They can then add that to the original price.

KS2 Maths Workout – pages 38 & 39 - Using Data

This requires the children to use and apply the data handling skills they have developed during the year.

Page 38 – 1. The children need to use the scale on the bar chart to identify how much each item costs. Once they have identified this, they can use the bar chart to answer questions a – e. They might find it useful to use actual coins to find their answers, or use column addition or subtraction methods. 2. The children should apply their column addition skills to find the totals for each vehicle. After finding how many children passed the school on Wednesday, it would be useful for them to calculate Thursday and Friday too to find the answer to question c easily.

Page 391. The children should be able to apply their knowledge of tallys. 2. The children need to use the tallys from question 1 to complete the table. They may need reminding that ‘frequency’ means total (how many). 3. This requires the children to interpret the data they have been using. To solve questions a, c and d, they should multiply the animal in question to find the correct answer.
