Northgate Homework: Thursday, March 29th

Thursday 29th March – Monday 16th April

Any misconceptions will be addressed after the children complete their homework tasks. These may be done through whole class, small group or individual sessions.

KS2 Comprehension pages 20 & 21 – An Interview with Rebecca Adlington

If your child finds the text particularly tricky, please read it to them, and ask them to answer the questions. Being able to understand and answer the questions that is the focus here.

KS2 Maths Workout – pages 36 & 37 Shape & Using Data

This requires the children to use and apply the number skills they are developing this year. They completed a variety of tasks including shapes during last half term and the first page will work to apply and recall those skills. The second page enables them to interpret data, which we continue to work on during the next half term.

Page 36 – 1. The children need to apply their skills of recognising and naming the 3D shapes to join them clearly to the correct label. 2. Using the word bank underneath the question, they simply need to write the number of the shape that is being described. They might find it useful to use the illustrations at the top of the page to consider the properties if they are unsure. 3. The children have looked at right angles recently, when learning about vertical, horizontal, parallel and perpendicular lines. The children should be able to identify that a right angle is 90 degrees and this is representing by a square in the corner. Identifying obtuse angles requires them to apply their knowledge from the beginning of KS2. They may need help to remember that acute angles are less than 90 degrees (cute = small) and obtuse angles are greater than 90 degrees.

Page 37 – 1. The children should be reminded to identify what each puzzle piece represents. As each piece represents 2 puzzles, they need to count up in 2’s to record the data for each of the questions below. It might be useful for them to first count how many puzzles were sold on each day, so they can add the necessary amounts together for questions b and d, and easily compare the data. 2. The children have conducted and presented data throughout the year. They should recognise that, as the scale is counting up to 2’s, when they need to find 11 it will be the line between 10 and 12. They should use a ruler (or the corner of a book/magazine!) to draw the lines, to ensure their data is clear and accurate.

Maths - Please encourage your child to use Sumdog at home. Also, the children are practicing applying their multiplication skills across different elements of Mathematics. In order to secure your child’s confidence in their times tables, this game is very useful: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button. It can be played on a computer or tablet (you don’t need to download the app), and allows the children to select the tables they want to practice.

Spelling - Spellings have been added to your child’s new spelling book. These will be tested on the Thursday of the first week back.

Reading – Please continue to read often with your child. If your child is a free reader, it is important they read a variety of text types and different authors – to continue to secure their enjoyment of reading. The children have access to a range of texts within our class library, which they are encouraged to use when changing their books. They are welcome to read a book from home within school.

Thank you for your continued support.

Northgate Homework: Friday, March 16th

Friday 16th March – Thursday 22nd March

Any misconceptions will be addressed after the children complete their homework tasks. These may be done through whole class, small group or individual sessions.

KS2 Grammar Punctuation and Spelling – Pages 20 & 21 Conjunctions and Main Clauses

This requires the children to apply their learning from their Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar sessions this week – whether they have been identifying and applying the 7 coordinating conjunctions.

KS2 Problem Solving 1 & 2 – Fractions of Amounts Worksheet

We have provided a worksheet, differentiated for Problem Solving 1 or 2, which will enable the children to apply their learning this week. At the start of the week, the children solved these problems by using the sharing of eggs between chickens. The children began to move on from this, using multiplication facts rather than a pictorial representation.
Each week, we will create an example question to demonstrate to the children how to apply their strategies. The children can decide whether they feel they need one to support their learning.

Sumdog - Please encourage your child to use Sumdog this week.

Spelling - Spellings were added to your child’s spelling book on Thursday. These will be tested next Thursday. Please work with your child to practice and apply their spelling patterns and rules.

Write 2 or 3 sentences that include as many of your spelling words as possible.

Thank you for your continued support.

Northgate Homework: Friday, March 9th

Friday 9th March – Thursday 15th March 2018

Any misconceptions will be addressed after the children complete their homework tasks. These may be done through whole class, small group or individual sessions.

KS2 Comprehension pages 12 & 13 – Daddy Fell Into the Pond

If your child finds the text particularly tricky, please read it to them, and ask them to answer the questions. Being able to understand and answer the questions that is the focus here. Remember to use the glossary at the bottom of the page!

KS2 Maths Grid Method Division Worksheet

This requires the children to use and apply the number skills they have been using this week. The children have been using the bus stop method to divide 2 digit and in some cases, 3 digit numbers. This also involves them using their multiplication knowledge. I have made a differentiated sheet for each group, with an example at the top to refresh their knowledge.

These will be tested on Thursdays.

Northgate Homework: Friday, March 2nd

Friday 2nd March to Thursday 8th March

Any misconceptions will be addressed after the children complete their homework tasks. These may be done through whole class, small group or individual sessions.

KS2 Grammar Punctuation and Spelling – Pages 34 & 35 Staying in the same tense.

This page will help to prepare the children to maintain the correct tense within their Literacy writing next week.

KS2 Problem Solving 1

Pages 12 Capacity: This requires to apply their knowledge of measurement, which they were developing within Maths last week. Hints: 1. The children need to use their multiplication knowledge and halving the 2 litres. 2. Again, the children will need to use their multiplication knowledge and recognise it is for 2 children. 3. The children may need to be reminded they could solve 3 x 9 and then add the zero (applying their grid method skills). 4. The use of multiplication skills are again needed. Encourage the children to use the space for working out and checking their answers.

Page 13 Balloons: This also requires to apply their knowledge of money, which will be taught over the coming weeks. It may be useful to use coins or printed coins for the children to visually see the money. Alternatively, they could use column addition and subraction to solve the problems.

or

KS2 Problem Solving 2 –

Worksheet – Area and Perimeter. Again, I have printed a worksheet for the children to complete to ensure the homework links directly to their work within school. The children have been developing and applying these skills within the classroom and should be confident to calculate perimeter using grid multiplication. They need to count the squares to find the area of the shapes, making sure they recognise each diagonal line through a square counts as half!

Sumdog - Please encourage your child to use Sumdog this week.

Spelling - Spellings were added to your child’s spelling book on Monday. These will be tested next Monday. After the half term, this will return to being on a Thursday. Thank you for understanding.

Write 2 or 3 sentences that include as many of your spelling words as possible.

Thank you for your continued support.
