Ready, Steady, Bake!

Northgate have developed their understanding of charities further and learned more about national charities, how they are organised and the impact these have on communities in this country and abroad.

We also discussed the difference between emergency and long-term aid and how charities could support Haiti and America after Hurricane Matthew.

The children have continued to study Andy Warhol in art and enjoyed looking at different pieces from his collection. The children selected a logo from a national charity and replicated this in the style of pop art. They produced some stunning pieces of work, demonstrating great care and understanding of both the charity they were representing and the style of art too.

Northgate celebrated the mid point of their unit of learning in style by competing in their very own Bake Off challenge, ‘Star Baker’ this week was awarded to Hedgehogs for excellent teamwork, following instructions and a fantastic final piece during their technical challenge. There was plenty of drama in the ‘tent’ including split whipped cream and soft biscuit bases but the children loved working together and will be writing their own persuasive advert for their Oreo Cheesecakes.

In literacy the children have looked at the world of digital media as a form of persuasion. They have watched a variety of trailers and promotional adverts and identified the impact and purpose of these as well as identifying the features they have used such as music to create suspense, highlights of the story and the use of sound effects. The children, as film critics, wrote reviews on these trailers noting the persuasive features they have used. They then created their own adverts for a toy or sweet they have invented using persuasive features.

In maths the children have challenged themselves with time. The children have made huge progress this week and can now accurately tell the time to the nearest five minutes with many telling the time to the nearest minute. The children completed challenges in a range of activities including bingo, using analogue clocks and then recording times in digital and analogue formats. Next week they will consolidate telling the time accurately to the nearest minute and calculating how much time has passed between two activities.

In French the children have used French and English dictionary and planned a presentation about themselves in French to share with the class next week.
