Exploring Explorers.

This week in Watergate, the children have been learning about some of the famous explorers who have helped shape the word we live in today.

After initially becoming ‘experts’ on a particular continent by reading and researching all about their given continent, the children shared their new knowledge with the class by becoming the teachers for a few minutes. Subsequently, the children used atlases, books, fact sheets and web pages to search for information about particular explorers, and discovered that many of the world’s greatest explorers live many hundreds of years ago.

The dreaded fractions were back in maths this week. However, all of the children worked incredibly hard and have a solid and growing understanding of the basics, and some of the more complicated aspects of fractions in maths. The class has covered fractions of shapes, fractions of amounts (e.g. half of 16) and have moved on to equivalent fractions. The next step for them is to begin working with decimal fractions, and this will be coming soon.

Our book in literacy for this week and next is The Firework Maker’s Daughter by Philip Pullman. The children have been reading the book and writing letters as if they are the main character, Lila, using emotional and powerful vocabulary to great effect.
