St Martins Academy Chester

'An Outstanding School' – Ofsted June 2015   Read the report here

This week in phonics we have learned how to apply our sounds in different words, using a wide range of sounds we have learned previously. We have also used these skills to help us to blend these sounds to read our speed words and ditty books with our reading buddy.

We have also started to use these sounds to write simple captions, Newgate have all worked hard at this so well done. I will send home some new words, including green words (Fred Talk), Red words (Tricky words) and monster words for your child to practise blending their sounds to make the words fluent.

If they want to write them, encourage them to segment these words (apart from Red words) and to count the sounds using their Fred Fingers.

In maths we have been consolidating our counting with 1:1 correspondence. Please could you encourage your child to count absolutely anything they can find at home and touch or move each object. Also any more photographs of shapes, numbers or letters and words in the environment would be much appreciated.

We will be working closely with you in how to support your child's fine motor control and pencil grip after Christmas and will send links to activities and videos to help you support us with this. If you could encourage them to hold their pencil with only their thumb and first finger with the rest of their fingers tucked behind that would be really helpful.

Thank you so much for all the photos emailed so far.

Just a reminder for all homework. We appreciate that weekends are very busy and fun-filled and therefore any homework given on a Friday is not expected to completed or sent in until the following Thursday.

Thank you for your continued support,

Miss Boynton, Mrs Pittam and Mrs Thombs.

'like' and 'would' this week as we used these when we wrote our letter to Father

Christmas. Although like is technically not a red word as we can use the split vowel

digraph i_e to read it I would like to encourage the children to learn to read and

write this by sight as it we will not be looking at split vowel digraphs until the

summer term.

In maths we have been measuring different sized presents and used different units

of measurement such as multi-link, rulers and tape measures. We have also been

continuing our counting and recognising numbers. This week it would be fantastic if

you could encourage your child to take photographs of numbers and words around

them (at home, in the car, at the shop, anywhere). Please email your photographs to

Miss Leese and we will be using these as a display in the classroom to show we have

numbers and letters all around us.

Thank you
