Similar to last week, half of Eastgate started the week by going to a clay workshop in Bebbington.

This is part of our whole school project, to commemorate WW1. All the children in St Martins are designing a clay poppy memorial, in memory of a fallen soldier, from the Cheshire area. The children scribed their names, and the names of a soldier into the base of the poppies, to commemorate them.

As part of the children’s transition morning and English work this week, they have been writing persuasive letters to apply for our new and upcoming, year 5 ‘Safety Officer’ position. Until now, the children have been too young to be part of the scheme, however now they are moving into Upper Key Stage 2, we are able to appoint two Safety Officers, to be part of a team, responsible for the road, internet, community and health and safety of St Martins. The children applied all their learnt skills from last half term, to independently write a persuasive text - and the best bit...they got to write on clipboards...outside, which they were very excited about.

In their maths work this week, the children have been solving real life money, 2 step, word problems. The practised reading the questions three times, to understand what the question was asking them to do, before working together to practically solve problems, discussing their thoughts with one another.

Eastgate have also enjoyed learning about the life processes of organisms. They children learnt the MRS GREN acronym, and its significance, in relation to living things, before working in their house teams to classify vertebrates into 5 categories: mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds and fish. Eastgate learnt key facts about each animal, in each category, and looked at what made them different and similar.

Finally, we want to say a huge well done to everyone for a fantastic effort during sport day. An excellent and fun day was had by all. We had some very happy winners, but it was also wonderful to see the true sportsmanship in lots of our children, who couldn’t have been more proud of their friends for their amazing achievements.

We hope you enjoy the sunshine this weekend,

The Year 4 Team.
