A Very Busy Eastgate Week.

In English this week, Eastgate have been drafting their own versions of the story ‘The Rabbits’ by Shaun Tan. The children were encouraged to magpie ideas from Tan’s version, but make them even better! They have also been trying hard to include parenthesis within their writing, as well as exciting sentence starters, such as fronted adverbials.

In maths, the children have been dividing 1 and 2 digit numbers by 10 and 100. They have been delving deeper into the decimal concept, and recognising and understanding how whole numbers can be divided into tenths and hundredths. As well as this, they have looked at symmetry, and have used mirrors and folding techniques to find lines of symmetry in a range of shapes and rotated shapes.

In their topic work, the children looked at Sir Francis Drake and whether he was seen as a villain or a hero. They learnt about how Drake’s name and fame became quite admired in a lot of places, and how people would swarm streets daily to behold him. However, there were others that divulged a lot of disgraces against him and his followers, terming him ‘the master thief of the unknown world.’ The children drew a portrait of Drake, surrounded by sentences describing the major events in his life, before debating whether he was a villain or hero, and writing up their thoughts.

Finally, the children had the best time engaging in lots of fun extra curricular activities this week. They kicked off the week by being superstar 'orienteers' around Delamere Forest. They used their excellent navigational skills to read the maps and complete the course in as quick a time as possible. On Wednesday, the children had a brilliantly Christmassy time at Storyhouse, watching The Secret Seven! They all thoroughly enjoyed watching the performance and using the newspaper to find the clues to help the Secret Seven solve the mystery! Lastly, a super fantastic well done to the swimming gala team (who did a fantastic job at representing our school on Thursday and came first!).

Enjoy your weekend everyone,

The Year 4 Team.
