This week, in Eastgate, the children have continued with their explorer and Colombia theme by learning about the cultural mix that makes up Colombia.

The children looked at a selection of letter artefacts from indigenous Columbian people and Spanish invaders to the country from hundreds of years ago. These letters had missing words, and the children had to use a word bank to complete the letters, before making inference and summarising how these people felt back then about what was going on and why.

We then moved on to look briefly at some famous pirates from hundreds of years ago, such as Blackbeard Edward Teach, the Barbarossa Brothers and Ching Shih. The children used fact sheets and researched we pages to research these pirates and make a fact page on them.

In English this week the children were intrigued by mysterious images and sentences about an upcoming story we will be looking at. The children were given the opportunity to look at a variety of pictures and sentences related to a particular story they have never seen before! In groups, the children explored (through lots of discussion, inference and questioning) the possible plot to the story. They then summarised their main predictions. As well as this, they explored larger images from the story, and wrote a setting description about a picture of their choice. The children have been trying hard to include the new sentence types they have learnt about this week in their writing: ‘3 bad – (dash) Question’ sentences and ‘Personification’ sentences. Well done Eastgate.

In maths, we have still been focusing on decimals, by adding and ordering them, first of all using practical apparatus to support our understanding, before moving onto to mental strategies.

Finally, what a success Christmas dinner was! A huge thank you to everyone who came – the children had a great time. It has totally got us into the Christmas spirit in Eastgate. Hopefully Santa’s little helpers will visit over the weekend and the classroom will be a little 'Christmassier' come Monday!

See you next week, and enjoy your weekend.
