Dividing Up!

This week, Bridgegate have worked extremely hard and have developed their mathematical understanding by applying their knowledge of division in order to tackle a range of problems regarding different fractions. To kick start the exploration of fractions, the children began the week by acting as ‘Mini Chefs’. The children successfully halved many objects, such as fruit and vegetables, a range of chicken eggs and shapes, such as pizza bases which they went onto decorating with lots of exciting toppings! To follow, the children applied their developed understanding to find one quarter and one third as the week unfolded, through a variety of practical problem solving activities.

When doing so, it will be useful to encourage them to recognise the bottom number of the fraction (denominator) as the amount of fruit altogether and the top number of the fraction (numerator) as the amount of fruit they are using.

Within literacy, the children have experienced a great amount of fun discovering how alliteration and smilies can be used to bring a story or poem to life! To extend the children's understanding and confidence in using alliteration within their writing, the children have begun to apply alliteration within their art work, inspired by the children’s current topic theme, ‘Animals and their Habitats’. To do so, Bridgegate firstly named their favourite animal which they had sketched within its habitat, and then described it using adjectives whilst considering the name of type of animal they drew. Secondly, the children extended the captions of their fantastic drawings and observed the habitat their animal lives in and the behaviour of their chosen animal. For example, 'Darcy the Dolphin is a delightful, dreamy and diamond skinned Dolphin. Darcy the Dolphin lives offshore in the open ocean.’

Prior to next week, when the children will begin to write their own poems, which will include the use of alliteration, it would be helpful to your child’s learning if you are able to practice the use of alliteration whenever and wherever possible when you are out and about exploring, or at home, as the children have thoroughly enjoyed creating captions this week. Please find attached two possible activities you may wish to complete at home alongside your child's homework this week, which will support your efforts in doing so. 

Within the current theme, Bridgegate have extended their scientific brains and have observed the similarities and differences of many animals in greater detail. In doing so, the children have come to understand the definition of ‘organisms’ and have effectively categorised a range of animals into different groups based upon their distinctive features, such as their ability to lay eggs on either land or in water, their physical features like their fur coat, scaly or smooth skin, wings, webbed feet, sharp teeth and claws. 

The children have also observed the temperature of animals’ blood and their ability to breath either on land or underwater in order to classify the selection of animals. The following groups of animals were defined by the children: insects, fish, mammals, amphibians, reptiles and birds. When extending the children’s understanding, Bridgegate were inspired to discover the difference between herbivores, omnivores and carnivores, by observing what the animals in ‘Bridgegate’s Zoo’ eat in order to survive in the wild. When doing so, the children were even encouraged to identify the difference between the terminology of an animal's pray and a predator which has helped the children to understand how animals survive and describe an animals life cycle in greater depth.
