Festive Fun.

BeFunky Collage 6

This week, the children have enjoyed preparing for the up and coming, festive celebrations by rehearsing their Christmas carols, dressing up in their wonderful, knitted Christmas jumpers and indulging in a delicious Christmas meal, served by all the teachers at St Martin’s Academy!

A big thank you to everyone who came to join in on the festivities, it is safe to say all of the children had a lovely afternoon.

This week in Maths, the children have extended their Bridgegate brains and have explored one & two more and one & two less of a given amount, ranging from numbers 0, all the way to 100! The boys and girls have worked extremely hard, both within their house teams and independently, to find more and less of an amount, using a number line and 100 square and in doing so, Bridgegate have explored a range of mathematical terminology.

To support your child’s learning at home, you may wish to encourage your child to play ‘Splat the Number’, which we have had fun playing this week. To play, simply close your eyes and read aloud the number your finger lands on. It is then your child’s responsibility to splat the number one/two more or one/two less as fast as they can.

Please feel free to use the following interactive 100 square, in order to consolidate your child’s learning when playing this game: Splat Square

Continuing with the children’s topic theme, ‘Old and New Toys’, under Bridgegate’s current transdiciplinary theme ‘Where We Are In Place and Time’, the boys and girls have completed their imaginative clay bears and jigsaw puzzles, which the children have designed independently and have created over the past two weeks within Art and Design. Each child’s detailed design has been inspired by their own, favorite toys from home and has made for wonderful, personal creations!

In Literacy, Bridgegate have worked extremely hard and have participated in many exploratory and discovery learning opportunities. Using the exciting texts, ‘Major Glad, Major Dizzy’ and ‘the Naughty Bus’, both written by the wonderful author Jan Oke, the children have discussed both plots in detail and have explored the feelings of all the characters, in each book. In doing so, the boys and girls in Bridgegate have collected a range of exciting adjectives, verbs and adverbs this week and have applied them within their writing, which has resulted in Bridgegate producing lots of excellent pieces of writing. Some of which even include the focused punctuation of this week, exclamation marks, wow!

Finally, for you to encourage your child’s writing and reading at home, you may find it helpful to access the following, recommended Literacy link:

Have a lovely weekend relaxing,

The Year One Team.
