St Martins Academy Chester

'An Outstanding School' – Ofsted June 2015   Read the report here

The extended school day allows the team at St Martin's to offer a wider range of activities on a more regular basis. Each week, every child takes part in at least three hours of physical activity in school plus a thirty minute swimming lesson from entry into the EYFS. This is further enhanced throughout the year by additional programs taught by external coaches increasing the offer to over four hours a week. In addition to PE, languages and the arts are taught both within the curriculum and beyond by visiting professionals or additional members of the teaching team.

Our extended hours also offer greater flexibility when it comes to enriching the curriculum either through inviting guests into school to enhance the learning experience or planning an offsite visit within the community and beyond. This year the team have arranged for storytellers to surprise the children and develop the use of rich language in their story telling as well as starting the term off with an impromptu visit to space in a star chamber. The children at St Martins regularly visit museums, castles and galleries to bring their learning alive as well as trips to the theatre to watch a range of performance styles.

Exploring the local area is also key to our learning experience and we are very lucky with the heritage and history that Hoole and Chester offer our learners. Opportunities to use the local high street to bring learning a real life context are readily used and can range from understanding the postal system with support of the team at the local post office whilst sending letters to Santa to visiting the local cobblers to bring the Elves and the Shoemaker properly to life.
