Creative & Performing Arts

'Just for a little while I was walking in the footsteps of others.'

We believe that the creative arts are a fundamental part of the curriculum and define the arts as music, dance, drama, art and literature. We believe that active engagement with the creative arts offer opportunities for children to explore, express and communicate their feelings whilst gaining experiences of the wider world. Through experiencing the arts, children develop their creativity, self-esteem and confidence. The creative arts can help to engage those pupils that might struggle in a classroom environment, while providing new and exciting challenges to high achieving learners.

Children at St Martin's Academy are given the opportunity to access a wealth of educational experiences that are centred around the arts. Our creative curriculum is designed to be rich, exciting and wide-ranging and provide a stream of memorable experiences to widen pupils' horizons and inspire ambition and aspiration. Art and design is a central part of our school's creative approach which runs throughout the EYFS and Key Stage 1. Art is an integral part of the creative curriculum and allows pupils to draw, paint, design, create models and sculptures using a variety of media to produce artwork which reflects the learning in termly or half termly topics.

All elements of performance are promoted in school with song, dance and drama used to enrich learning experiences across the curriculum, whether it is re-enacting a favourite story to support creative writing, learning a rap to help remember how to double in maths or interviewing an alien who crash landed in the school playground. All children have the opportunity to take part in our end of term performances which take place in front of an enthusiastic audience of family and friends whether it is our Harvest Service, Christmas Nativity or Easter sing-alongs.
